1. More knocks, less praise for Buhari on New Year message [Punch]

Some prominent Nigerians and groups on Wednesday assessed the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.)’s New Year speech and said it was uninspiring.

The Committee for Defence of Human Rights, a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr Obadiah Mailafia; an elder statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai,  and  the Peoples Democratic Party, said they were not moved by  the President’s speech.

Despite stiff opposition from stakeholders, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Bankers’ Committee have announced that it would commence the redevelopment of the National Arts Theatre in Lagos, by January 2020.

The High Commission of Nigeria in Ghana was neither evicted from its chancery nor its residence, says Ferdinand Nwonye,  spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Nwonye disclosed that the property sited on 10, Barnes Road, Accra, Ghana, is one of the official quarters of the High Commission.

4. Minimum Wage: NLC Places State Councils On Red Alert [Sun]

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is set to tackle governors who failed to meet the December 31 deadline for the implementation of the New Minimum Wage.

In his New Year message, NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, asked  state councils to await directive on the next line of action.

The leader of repentant bandits in Zamfara State identified as Muhammadu Bello has revealed how he met the state commissioner of police, Mr Usman Nagogo, inside the dreaded Shinkafi forest alongside his motorbike-riding gang for a peace meeting.

Bello spoke during a peace meeting with stakeholders at the palace of the Emir of Shinkafi, Alhaji Muhammadu Makwashe Isah, to consolidate on the achievement recorded since the start of the peace dialogue in the state.
