The Conference of Alumni Associations of Nigerian Universities (CAANU) has elected Prof. Ahmed Tijjani Mora of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria as the national president of the association.
In a keenly contested election, the incumbent national chairman of CAANU, and national president of the ABU Alumni Association, Prof. Mora faced Mall. Mohammed Sani Wada, the national president of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ABU) Alumni Association and Dr. Fashakin of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) Alumni Association in the national chairmanship position election.
A statement made available to LEADERSHIP said at the end of the election, Prof. Mora of ABU, Zaria emerged the winner having polled 65 per cent of the entire votes.
In his acceptance speech after having been sworn-in, along with other elected NEC members, the re-elected national chairman of CAANU, Prof. Mora promised to carry all University Alumnni Associations in Nigeria along in an attempt to further promote learning, teaching, research and development and community services in Nigeria.
Prof. Mora further advocated that federal government should declare an Alumni Day as a form of encouragement for all university associations in Nigeria to reflect and provide ways and means, especially in the form of resources mobilisation from the ranks of their respective alumni members and friends of their universities in augmenting the efforts of the various managements of the universities in adequately funding university education.
Other key positions of the NEC filled mostly unopposed were those of the deputy national chairman, won by Tajudeen Olusegun Uthman, the immediate past president of the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) Alumni Association, Ijagun, Ogun State and Dr.Godwin Akpan, the immediate past president of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) Alumni Association, Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State as the national secretary.
The statement recalled that the Conference of Alumni Associations of Nigerian Universities (CAANU) held its 2018 Convention on 13 October, 2018 in the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (FUAM), Makurdi, Benue State.
‘’The vice-chancellor of the University, Prof. Richard A Kimbir, declared the convention, which was attended by five delegates each from no fewer than 28 University Alumni Associations in the country from the federal, states and privately -owned universities open.
‘’Earlier on 12 October, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of CAANU under its national chairman, Prof. Mora, held its 3rd quarter (Q.3) meeting .
‘’The NEC also paid courtesy visits on the Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom in the Government House, Makurdi and were warmly received by the deputy governor of the State, Engr. Benson Abounu, the vice-chancellor of FUAM and the Tor Tiv, His Royal Majesty, Prof. J.O.I Ayatse in his Makurdi residence.
