For failing to appear before it, Senate Tursday insisted that the Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris should willingly make himself available to proffer answers to allegations against him.
Idris was to appear before a Senate ad-hoc committee to investigate the various allegations levelled against police, Inspector General of Police and Police Service Commission but failed to show up, as according to his lawyer, the matter was already in court.
Recall that Senator representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District, Hamman Misau, had opened a can worms against the IGP, accusing him of corruption and misconduct.
On Tursday at plenary, chairman of the Senate ad-hoc committee, the Deputy Chief Whip, Francis Alimikhena , upon Order 43 of the Senate rules, told the lawmakers that because the IGP refused honour invitation, it has fix Tuesday, 7th November 2017 for the IGP to appear and that if he fails again, the committee will issue a warrant of arrest.
According to Alimikhena, section 80 of the 1999 constitution as amended has provided Senate with explicit powers to invoke arrest of any person who fails to appear before it to provide information or answer accusations.
Consequently, Senate President Bukola Saraki maintained the Senate’s call on the IGP not to hesitate to appear, saying as law enforcement officer, Idris ought to know what the law entails and should not in anyway contravene it.
“Tuesday Next week, the IGP should, like any other person, appear and provide answers to the allegations against him, if he has nothing to hide. As chief law enforcement officer, he (Idris) should know what the law is,”Saraki insisted.
