One Kassim Muhammad Kassim,member representing Akwanga South in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly (NSHA), on Tuesday led thousands to protest against poor electricity supply in the state.
It was reported that the protest which was organised by the Youths Wing of Mada Development Association (YWMDA), drew massive turn out from Akwanga, Nassarawa-Eggon and Wamba Local Government
Areas (LGAs).
Addressing the angry protesters, the big boss said that his participation in the protest was in solidarity with his people against wanton exploitation by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).
According to him, the exploitation is just too much to bear, given the fact that AEDC gives light for three hours in a day in most areas,but posts bills of thousands at the end of the month.
“They only give light whenever they want to sent bills, and as soon as bills are paid you would not see light again”.
“This situation cannot be allow to continue so I am calling on the Federal Government to do something urgently if not the activities of this company is affecting the image of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration” he added.
Similarly, Comrade Gyuni Umaru, National President of YWMDA, said the protest was necessitated after a complain letter written to the Headquarters of AEDC could not yield any result.
He added that they youths are giving AEDC one week ultimatum to improve their service in the area or close down their offices and live the
area.
“In the next one week, we want them to stat the installation of prepaid meters to all customers, supply light for at least 18 hours per day.
“We also want immediate reconnection of Wamba, Nassarawa-Eggon and Andaha that were disconnected for just no reason.
“We also want the Headquaters of AEDC to imidiately transfer the the Area Manager of of the company in Akwanga and bring a more competent person as the present person does not relate well with customers,” he added.
He however assured that youths would continue to be law abiding even as he said the youths
want the company to know that they can fight for their rights. Receiving the youths in his Palace, the Chun-Mada and Chairman Traditional Council of Akwanga local government, Samson Gamu-Yare, expressed gratitude to the youths for ensuring that the protest was peaceful.
He said that the traditional council in the area has also written severally to AEDC but nothing
was done to improve the situation.
He therefore assured the youths the he would channel their grievances to the appropriate authority for prompt action in order to avoid a situation that would lead to breakdown of law and order.
