IAAF World Championship: Team Nigeria Still Missing On Medal Table

Must read

With less than 24 hours to the end of the ongoing 2017 IAAF World Championship in London, Team Nigeria are yet to make an impact at the event. The country’s representatives have been rather dismal in their outings at the Games even as African countries like Kenya, South Africa, Ethiopia, Uganda, Morocco, Cote d’Ivoire and Tanzania are already on the medal table of the championships.

Nigeria’s top-rated athletes like Margaret Bamgbose, Patience Okon-George and Yinka Ajayi didn’t make it to the final of the women’s 400m event.

Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor could not qualify for the final of the 100m, while Glory Nathaniel, who had a personal best of 55:30secs was disqualified in the 400m Hurdles semi-finals on Tuesday.

The country will now have to shift its attention today’s 4x400m women’s event.

Ese Brume and Okagbare-Ighoteguonor will feature in the long jump later today.

Edose Ibadin, who specialises in the 800m and Samson Oghenewegba Nathaniel, a quarter-miler, also could not win any medal for the country in their respective events.

Kenya is currently placed second on the overall medals table with three gold, one silver and three bronze. South Africa is third on the table with two gold, one silver and two bronze, while Ethiopia is sixth on the medal standing with one gold and two silver.

Uganda, Cote d’Ivoire and Morocco are also on medal table one silver each, while Tanzania also on the table with one bronze medal.

The U.S. is first on the table with six gold, seven silver and six bronze medals.

The competition which began on Aug. 4 will be concluded tomorrow, August 13, 2017.
