The 13th African Movie Academy Awards AMAA took place last weekend indices from the event showed that other African countries were catching up on the art of film making as Senegalese and Malian movies, Felicite’ and ‘Wulu’ respectively got nine awards between them.
The award night which was hosted by talented actress, Nse Ikpe Etim and held at the Eko Hotels in Lagos gathered the creme de la creme of the African cinema. According to the jury led by Bernie Goldblat, there has been a growing achievement in quality of films across Africa.
The host, Lagos State government represented by deputy governor, Mrs Idiat Adebule, said that the entertainment industry over the years have contributed immensely to the growth of Lagos State. “Through you, our tourism industry can be developed,” she added.
In her address, the founder of AMAA, Peace Anyiam Osigwe said that the awards united the continent through a rewarding system that celebrates excellence and professionalism in the business of motion picture. She urged various governments within Africa to increase support and investment in the creative sector. “Our films and film makers are breaking boundaries in the global film making business and they need all the support from government, organisations and individuals. We can use the entertainment industry to forget our ethnicity, remove borders, stop the hate, promote peace and be happy with our diversity,” says Peace.
Nse tried to make a good anchor including throwing a jibe at AY to leave the numbers alone and do film. Paul Play Dairo and SSP were among the musicians that serenaded the audience.
Other winners include Akin Omotoso, who won the best director award, Nkem Owoh who received the Lifetime Achievement Award, “76” won the Lagos State Best Nigerian film award. Indeed ‘Felicite’ emerged the biggest winner of the night; it won the AMAA 2017 Best Film.
